Foam board, wood sticks, light
A few years ago, I visited Frank Gehry’s Weisman Art Museum building in Minneapolis. I was awed by the building’s fragmented and disjointed appearance, as I had never before seen such a mesmerizing form on such a large scale. It struck me as a truly unique expression. After studying more about Gehry’s design philosophy, I understood that the Weisman building represents his signature style: deconstructive yet cohesive. Chaos and Order is my take on Gehry’s notion of duality in his work. Both chaos and order exist in our lives, yet a hallmark of humanity is for the latter to serve as the foundation. However, chaos introduces novelty, innovation, and prevents stagnation. I started this project by cutting different triangular shapes from foam board, and beveling the cuts so I could play with how pieces could be joined together at different angles. The wooden forms are a skeletal projection of the fragmented vocabulary seen in the foam form. Over a hundred Triangular pieces of varying dimensions and angles came together to create a cohesive whole.
